President Donald Trump announced Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nominee on Monday. Kavanaugh, a 53-year-old federal appeals judge, served in George W. Bush's administration as both counsel and a staff secretary. Democrats voiced their opposition to Trump's pick, saying he could negatively impact access to health care and abortion rights. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy who announced his plans to retire in June.

Other major headlines of the week included all 13 members of the trapped soccer team being rescued from the flooded Thai cave, a grand jury indicting 12 Russian spies in 2016 election hacking and Japan facing the worst floods in decades.
