Cowboys CB Marquez White arrested after flashing gun in road-rage incident
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Marquez White is facing a felony charge after he allegedly pulled a gun during an apparent road-rage incident in October, the Dallas Morning News reported on Monday afternoon.
The incident on Oct. 20 began on the Dallas North Tollway in Plano, Texas, when White told the Dothan Eagle in a statement that he was “met by an aggressive driver” while exiting the freeway. The driver pulled up beside him and started yelling racial slurs and threatened to kill him. When the driver moved toward his glove box, White flashed his gun.

“I hit the brakes to get him off of me and could then see him becoming very angry in my rear view mirror,” White said in a statement. “He then sped up again and I hit my brakes again and after this time he pulled over to my driver side while still driving and proceeded to yell racial slurs such as the “N” word while also threatening to kill me. Simultaneously while doing this he began to reach towards his glove box and that is when I flashed my weapon. He then hit the brakes, got behind me, and proceeded to follow me to my house. Upon arriving at my house I exited my car and went into my home as he sat outside and contacted the authorities.”
White was indicted on June 7 on a single count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and is currently free on bond. He said he didn’t learn of the arrest warrant until last month when a Cowboys staff member notified him.
“Marquez did everything legally,” his lawyer, Toby Shook, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “He displayed a gun, but didn’t point it at this individual because he was very concerned with how the individual was making threats. I’m hopeful that this case can be dismissed because I don’t think he violated the law.”
White legally owns the gun in question and said he believes “strongly that this is a personal attack” on both his image and the Cowboys’.
“We are very proud of the way he handled the entire situation,” White’s agent, Peter Schaffer, said in a statement to NBC Sports. “He defused a potentially dangerous encounter and did everything by the book. He notified the team and his agent. The police have done a disservice to him by doing an inadequate investigation and filing charges with no proof or justification.
White was drafted in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Cowboys, and signed to their practice squad last season. The 23-year-old recorded 39 solo tackles and three interceptions during his final two years at Florida State.
