Ivanka Trump leaves Internet baffled after tweeting a 'Chinese' proverb

First daughter Ivanka Trump tweeted what she called a “Chinese proverb” to mark President Donald Trump’s recent historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and the Internet was quick to point out it isn’t one.

“Those who say it can not be done, should not interrupt those doing it,” she wrote on Monday.

Many users of China’s social media site Weibo were baffled but helpful. A number of people offered suggestions for a Chinese equivalent.

They included, “A true gentleman should keep silent while watching a chess game,” and, “If you can do it, do it; if you can’t, shut up.”

The Washington Post did some digging into the phrase Ivanka Trump shared and found that “according to the website QuoteInvestigator.com, a version of it may have first been published in the United States more than 100 years ago.”
