Gordon Hayward has surgery to remove screws from leg, expected to return for training camp

The Boston Celtics announced on Wednesday that forward Gordon Hayward had surgery to remove screws from the broken fibula he suffered during the first game of the regular season.

The team expects Hawyard to be sidelined an additional six to eight weeks before he is able to return to basketball activities.

Hayward’s ankle and fibula ‘structurally sound’

“Hayward’s ankle and fibula are both structurally sound, and the removal of the plate and screws was necessary as they were causing irritation to his peroneal tendons,” a Celtics statement reads. “He is scheduled to return to basketball activities in six to eight weeks and is expected to be at full strength for training camp.”

There was hope late in the season that Hayward may have been ready for a playoff return. He obviously did not take the court in the postseason, and it appears the irritation from the screws may have closed the door on that hope.

Hayward’s situation sounds familiar in Boston

It’s a familiar refrain for Celtics fans after point guard Kyrie Irving had unexpected season-ending surgery to remove infected screws that had been placed to fix a broken kneecap.

But Hayward’s procedure comes as the season is over on the heels of an unexpected deep Celtics playoff run with its two star players sidelined.

If Hayward and Irving are indeed able to return healthy for the beginning of the season, expectations will by sky high in Boston.
