Hawaii's volcanic eruption causes menacing blue flames to rise from the Earth
Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has been erupting for roughly three weeks now and continues to present new and dangerous situations, reports CNN.
A recent video shared by the U.S. Geological Survey shows blue flames are now shooting up through cracks in the earth.
“When lava buries plants and shrubs, methane gas is produced as a byproduct of burning vegetation,” USGS explains. “Methane gas can seep into subsurface voids and explode when heated, or as shown in this video, emerge from cracks in the ground several feet away from the lava. When ignited, the methane produces a blue flame.”
