Inmates escape after power malfunction caused cells to unlock

One inmate facing murder charges remains at large after escaping from a South Carolina jail.

According to WIS, three inmates broke free from the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center on Saturday after an electrical short opened a pod’s cell doors and a number of incarcerated individuals overpowered the guard.

The Washington Post reports that from there “one of the inmates simply walked up to the malfunctioning control panel and mashed buttons until more doors opened.”

Once the trio made it to the jail’s perimeter, they used bedding to make it over the barbed-wire fence then fled toward a nearby wooded area, notes CBS News.

Christopher Boltin was found in Lexington County on Sunday and sent back to the jail and Tyshon Johnson was apprehended by U.S. Marshals on Tuesday afternoon. The search for the remaining inmate, Curtis Green, has since been expanded to three states.

Their pictures were made public, and authorities advise against approaching Green, as he is considered possibly armed and dangerous.

The electrical glitch and subsequent breakout come as construction on a new detention facility is underway.

That modernized jail is expected to be completed in 2020.
