Woman wins $1.2 million on $18 Kentucky Derby Pick 5 bet

Well that bet was certainly justified.

A Texas woman nearly matched Justify's $1.24 million payday for winning the Kentucky Derby after she correctly picked five straight winners in Races 8-12 at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

The woman won $1.2 million after placing an $18 Pick 5 wager at the Retama Park racetrack in Salem, Texas, roughly 1,100 miles away from the action in Louisville, Kentucky, according to ABC News.

While Justify was the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby at 3-1 odds, the woman, who requested to remain unidentified, correctly picked a number of upsets from the 8th to 11th races.

The Texas woman correctly picked Mauraud (8-1) to win the American Turf Stakes in the ninth race, Yoshida (10-1) to win the Old Forester Turf Classic in the 11th race and 40-1 longshot Funny Duck in the Pat Day Mile, the 10th race of the day. The bettor also correctly picked Limousine Liberal (4-1) to win the Churchill Downs Stakes, the eighth race of the day.

Rachel Bagnetto, spokeswoman for Retama Park, told ABC News a bettor winning that much for such a small wager is "unheard of" at the Salem, Texas racetrack.

"It's extremely rare," Bagnetto said. "To bet that little amount of money and win $1.2 million is unheard of. In fact, it's the first time it's happened at Retama."
