Paralympic Games organizers respond to insensitive Trump remarks

Paralympic Games organizers hope President Trump will tune into future events even though he finds them “tough to watch.”

“We hope the US President continues to watch and be inspired by the Paralympics,” organizers tweeted Saturday, after Trump’s insensitive remarks drew ire on social media.

Organizers touted the games’ expanded viewership.

“Record numbers around the world are not finding @Paralympics tough to watch. Billions of viewers now take in the Paralympics in hundreds of countries around the world,” the International Paralympic Committee said on Twitter.

The games allow athletes with a range of disabilities to compete.

Trump praised the athletes and said he’d been inspired by their exploits.

“What happened with the Paralympics was so incredible and so inspiring to me,” Trump told members of the Olympic and Paralympic teams.

He then suggested that the games made him uncomfortable and he’d been unable to watch a lot of the competition.

“And I watched — it’s a little tough to watch too much, but I watched as much as I could,” Trump said from the White House.

Trump delivered the insensitive remarks while surrounded by members of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams, whom he congratulated for competing in Pyeongchang last month.

The U.S. topped the podium in South Korea, earning 36 medals, including 13 gold, 15 silver and 8 bronze.
