Woman makes history on Colorado Rockies TV broadcast

Jenny Cavnar became the first woman since 1993 to do television play-by-play for a major league game when she called Monday's contest between the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres.

Cavnar is the first woman behind the microphone for a telecast since Gayle Gardner called a game between the Rockies and Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 3, 1993.

"We are extremely proud of @jennycavnar who tonight becomes among the first women ever to call play-by-play for a @MLB broadcast," the Rockies said in a tweet.

Cavnar, working for AT&T SportsNet, usually covers the Rockies as an on-field or in-studio reporter. She has also filled in as a color analyst on TV and on the radio. Prior to joining the Rockies beat, Cavnar was a reporter for the Padres.

Suzyn Waldman has done play-by-play for the New York Yankees on the radio during her career, and Jessica Mendoza has been a mainstay as a color commentator for ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" telecasts since 2016.
