  • The Sacramento County Sheriff released new video on Monday showing the moment a police SUVs hit a 61-year-old protester during demonstrations last weekend.
  • The protester, Wanda Cleveland, was among a group of people who marched in Sacramento, California, on Saturday. The protests were in response to the death of 22-year-old Stephon Clark, who was shot during a police encounter on March 18.
  • The sheriff says the deputy in the vehicle that struck Cleveland was unaware of the impact.
  • Cleveland was taken to a hospital with injuries.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department released new video on Monday that showed the moment a 61-year-old protester was struck by a police SUV.

The protester, Wanda Cleveland, was hit as two police cruisers moved through a crowd of demonstrators in Sacramento, California, on Saturday night. People there were rallying in support of Stephon Clark, a 22-year-old black man who was killed during an encounter with police on March 18.

An independent autopsy released a day earlier showed that police shot Clark seven times in the back and neck. Clark was unarmed.

In the video, a loud thud is heard at the moment Cleveland was hit. People can be heard reacting to the impact, and then the back window of one of the SUVs gets shattered.

The cruisers drove off without stopping. Cleveland was taken to a hospital with injuries and later released.

Sheriff Scott Jones said the deputy in the vehicle that struck the woman was unaware of the impact. He said the deputies in the two cruisers were not assigned to monitor the protests on Saturday, and had happened upon the demonstrations on Florin Road and Stockton Boulevard by chance, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
