Celtics star Kyrie Irving out 3-to-6 weeks after knee procedure

Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving will return to basketball activities in three-to-six weeks after undergoing a procedure on his left knee Saturday.

The Celtics announced on Saturday that Irving underwent a procedure to remove a tension wire in his left knee, which was originally put in place as part of a surgical repair of a fractured patella sustained during the 2015 NBA Finals. Irving’s knee was found to be structurally sound, the Celtics added.

Irving, 25, has missed the past five games for the Celtics because of the lack of comfort in his knee. There was hope last week that Irving would return this week, but his knee issue did not improve with rest.

Irving, a five-time All-Star, has averaged 24.4 points, 5.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 60 games this season, his first with the Celtics following a blockbuster trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Boston is currently 49-23 and has a firm grip on the second seed in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics last week lost center Daniel Theis to season-ending knee surgery and guard Marcus Smart for six-to-eight weeks to surgery on a torn tendon in his right thumb.
