Brock Osweiler's crazy NFL journey continues, as he lands with Dolphins

Brock Osweiler being the biggest story in free agency seems like it happened a generation ago. It was two years ago.

In March of 2016, Osweiler signed a $72 million deal with the Houston Texans. The deal he agreed to Friday with the Miami Dolphins is far more modest. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Osweiler’s deal with Miami.

The past two years of Osweiler’s career have been about as crazy as any in recent NFL memory:

• Signed with Texans for $72 million after turning down Broncos. Osweiler was coming off playing a key part in the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 title season, before he was benched for Peyton Manning in Week 17.

• Struggled with Texans and was benched, then got back job due to injury to Tom Savage. Started a playoff win for Houston.

• Traded to Browns with a second-round pick in a practically unheard of NFL salary-dump trade.

• Browns claimed Osweiler was in the mix to start the 2017 season, gave him two preseason starts, benched him and cut him before the regular season.

• Broncos, needing a backup after Paxton Lynch’s injury, signed Osweiler to a small contract. He ended up making four starts, and against Indianapolis came off the bench to post a 147.7 rating in a win.

• Broncos don’t re-sign Osweiler, who lands with Dolphins.

That’s all in a little more than 24 months. Osweiler gets to reunite with Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who worked with Osweiler as an assistant with the Broncos. Ryan Tannehill is still the Dolphins’ starter and the team will likely consider quarterbacks in the draft, but Osweiler will be there in the meantime if needed.

Osweiler has a weird place in NFL history. He also still has plenty of time to add to his odd story, which now includes his fourth team in a little more than 12 months.
