The set of “Morning Joe” knocked down Republican explanations of their loss in the Pennsylvania special congressional election earlier this week, with co-host Mika Brzezinski saying that the GOP spin was destroying the party’s credibility.
“They should’t spin it. They look obviously like they’re all lying,” said Brzezinski on set Thursday.
“This response to this election. The Republican party is going to become the party of dishonesty and it already is,” she added moments later. “They’re going into the midterms and they’re going to be the party that lies because they’re behind this president who lies and they can’t even take a loss and look at it realistically and perhaps productively rebuild.”
After a nail-biter race, Democrat Conor Lamb edged out his Republican opponent Rick Saccone in the conservative Pennsylvania district that went heavily for Donald Trump in 2016. The loss suggests Republicans in 2018 will face headwinds in districts that once would have been considered safe.
Republicans, who during the campaign blasted Lamb as a typical tax and spend, Nancy Pelosi Democrat, have increasingly taken on the position that his victory came because he acted like a Republican.

“The young man last night that ran, he said, ‘Oh, I’m like Trump. Second Amendment, everything. I love the tax cuts, everything.’ He ran on that basis,” Trump told a private fundraiser, according to audio obtained by The Atlantic. “He ran on a campaign that said very nice things about me. I said, ‘Is he a Republican? He sounds like a Republican to me.'”
“This is the worst case scenario fro Republicans. You’ve got a district that’s been just as red and rock ribbed conservative as could be since 2000,” Joe Scarborough said, who also predicted a Democratic “wave” was on the horizon.
