Updated

A student was injured in the neck after his high school teacher in Seaside, California reportedly accidentally fired a gun in the classroom.

The incident happened at Seaside High School.

According to the local NBC station KSBW, Dennis Alexander, who also serves as a reserve police officer and Seaside City Council Mayor Pro Tem, was teaching a course about gun safety for his Administration of Justice class.

The 17-year-old's neck was moderately injured, according to the student's father.

According to the Californian, school resumed later that day after police said everything was safe.

Teachers are not legally allowed to have firearms in California classrooms, even if they have a concealed carry permit.

Alexander's photo is off of the Seaside High School website -- he has been placed on administrative leave by the school and the Sand City Police Department.
