Browns use some of their cap space, agree to trade for Jarvis Landry

The Cleveland Browns don’t know who their quarterback will be in 2018, but they have some nice targets for him to throw to.

The Browns will trade a 2018 draft pick and a 2019 draft pick for Miami Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Landry had signed his franchise tag, and the Browns could easily absorb that cap hit. They’re the only team in the NFL with more than $100 million in projected cap space. They’ll presumably start working on a long-term extension for Landry, who has 400 catches in four seasons and just turned 25 years old.

The Browns are putting together some interesting pieces. Landry is one of the best slot receivers in the NFL. Receiver Josh Gordon, who once led the NFL in receiving yards, came back off his multiple suspensions late last season and looked pretty good. Cleveland also has former first-round picks Corey Coleman at receiver and David Njoku at tight end. Quarterback is a separate concern, but the Browns are expected to draft one with the first pick of the NFL draft or the fourth pick.

The Browns, coming off an 0-16 season, should show dramatic improvement on offense. If the Browns draft running back Saquon Barkley first overall, draft their quarterback fourth (or sign AJ McCarron), Barkley and a new quarterback will pair with Gordon, Coleman, Landry and Njoku. The line is also pretty good if tackle Joe Thomas decides to not retire. And since the Browns still have more cap space than anyone else, they’re probably going to shop some more in free agency.

The Browns won’t turn things around overnight. They’re 1-31 the last two seasons. There’s a lot of work to be done. But they keep adding talent, and it’s easy to see the seeds of a breakout at some point. Landry fits pretty well with what Cleveland is trying to build.
