Derrick Rose to sign with the Timberwolves for rest of the season

Derrick Rose is reuniting with Tom Thibodeau.

The former Knicks point guard will play the remainder of the season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, signing a deal with them on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Rose, 29, will finish the season playing for Thibodeau, who coached him with the Chicago Bulls where Rose won an MVP in 2010-11.

Rose began the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a one-year, veteran’s minimum contract but was traded on Feb. 8 to the Utah Jazz in a blockbuster three-team deal that resulted in George Hill and Rodney Hood joining the Cavaliers.

Rose was waived by the Jazz two days later and has not played since he was initially traded.

He has only played in 16 games this season because of an ankle injury, averaging 9.8 points per game with 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

In November, Rose stepped away from the club to “seriously” re-evaluate his future, but rejoined the team in December and was back on the court Jan. 18.

Rose has been marred by injuries for most of his career since winning the MVP in his third season at just 22.

The Timberwolves are currently sixth in the Western Conference and are trying to reach the postseason for the first time since the 2003-04 season. Rose remains eligible for the playoff roster because he was waived prior to March 1.

Rose spent last season with the Knicks, where he made waves after going AWOL for 24 hours and missing a game last January. He also grew tired of Phil Jackson’s triangle offense and was critical of the Knicks’ defensive game plan and effort.

Rose also missed most of the preseason with the Knicks because he was in Los Angeles dealing with a civil trial of a rape allegation at the time.
