Chelsea Clinton talks about her friendship with Ivanka Trump

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton joined The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she spoke about her friendship with current first daughter Ivanka Trump. Though Clinton says they’re “absolutely” friends, she also said the two haven’t spoken in a long time. There seems to be a pretty obvious reason for that.

“It’s clear … that she has supported policies and decisions that I don’t agree with,” Clinton said, adding, “I’ve been very vocal about my opposition to President Trump.”

And though they’re friends, Clinton believes Ivanka Trump is fair game for criticism she has received for her role in her father’s administration.

“I think anyone who works for the president certainly should expect to get scrutinized not only for decisions that she or he is making but whatever decisions the White House is making on any given day,” Clinton said.

The nepotism involved in both Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, working for the president has drawn the ire of many, but Colbert came up with one situation in which Ivanka being at the White House could be a good thing.

Colbert asked, “Could you call her up and say, ‘Hey, maybe no war with North Korea.’ Or anything like that?”

Though Colbert was clearly joking, Clinton wasn’t.

“I certainly am just really sad that we’re at a point in time where that even has to be said,” she said.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
