Utah lawmakers rap about how bills become laws -- and it's as bad as you think

The Utah House of Representatives released a rap video on Twitter Thursday. Yes, you read correctly.

The roughly 90-second clip, set to the theme song from the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” shows a number of the state’s lawmakers rapping about how a bill becomes law.

“Our representatives have taken the time to explain how a law is made…with a surprise twist,” the Utah House wrote on its Twitter page. “Give it a listen and share so all your friends can know how laws are made!”

“This is a story about how our bills get flipped into a law. I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there. I’ll tell you how a bill becomes law in this our chamber,” they croon.

“In a legislator’s mind an idea is raised. In the law book is where they spend most of their days. Drafting out maxin’ out, hardly relaxing all cool,” they continued while replacing Will Smith’s lyrics about West Philadelphia with the legislative sausage-making process.

“And all introducing bill inside of hours chambers, when more than a couple of guys start reviewing the bill, start making changes in committee on the hill. They may get in one little fight because it’s just cause they care.”

… and it pretty much goes on this way.

The video is a cautionary tale about the risks of using humor to explain the arcane workings of the political process and was promptly dragged online after it was released on the Utah House of Representative’s Twitter page.
