Kasich suggests two-party system could be coming to an end

Ohio Governor John Kasich suggested on Sunday that the nation’s two-party system may not be long for this world.

He said during an appearance on ABC’s ‘This Week,’ “We may be beginning to see the end of a two-party system. I’m starting to really wonder if we are going to see a multi-party system at some point in the future in this country because I don’t think either party is answering people’s deepest concerns and needs.”

Kasich went on to suggest that younger generations could be the ones bringing about that change, noting, “I mean, I don’t think it’s going to happen tomorrow, but I think over time, do not be surprised if these millennials and these Gen Xers begin to say, ‘Neither party works, we want something new.’”

When asked about the shortcomings of his own Republican party, Kasich instead spoke on the troubles facing the Democrats, pointing to their seeming lack of a clear agenda and apparent dependence upon “the Republicans bouncing the basketball off of their foot and out of bounds.”

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, was part of the interview as well.

The two have been making a number of appearances together and are working with one another on key issues in their states, including healthcare and how to fill the employment gap left by automation.

There has been a great deal of speculation about the two running on a single ticket in 2020, but neither has given a clear indication that such a thing will happen.

According to Axios, if they run, they would likely do so with “Kasich at the top of the ticket.”
