Fla. Governor Rick Scott opposes President Trump's proposal to arm teachers in wake of school shooting

Florida Governor Rick Scott has said he is not on board with President Trump’s idea to arm teachers in the wake of a mass shooting that claimed 17 lives at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, the Republican governor confirmed that he opposed the president’s idea, saying, “I disagree with him. I believe you have got to focus on people that are well-trained—law enforcement that are trained to do this.”

“I want our teachers to teach, and I want our law enforcement officers to be able to protect the students. I want each group to focus on what they’re good at,” Scott went on to explain.

His position runs counter to that of the president who has spoken in support of allowing trained teachers to carry concealed weapons in schools.

During a listening session with those affected by the recent shooting and others, Trump said, “If you had a teacher with — who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly.”

“I really believe that if these cowards knew that the school was well-guarded, from the standpoint of having, pretty much, professionals with great training, I think they wouldn’t go into the school to start off with,” the president added.

Trump has also suggested giving armed teachers a bonus for being part of such a program.
