Seven adult siblings who survived torture home embracing freedom

The seven adult siblings rescued from a California home where 13 kids were held captive are making their own decisions for the first time — and catching up on Harry Potter and other pop culture hits.

The adults are being treated at Corona Medical Center after years of abuse and neglect in their Perris home. Parents David and Louse Turpin, who pleaded not guilty to torture and other charges, are expected to appear in a Riverside courtroom later Friday.

Part of the hospital has been converted to make it more comfortable for the adult kids, according to CBS News.

"That in itself is a new experience for them, understanding that they do have rights and they do have a voice," lawyer Jack Osborn told the network.

The siblings have an outdoor area at the medical center where they can play sports and do other activities. It's quite a change after being tortured and chained to their beds.

"That's a big deal, deciding what they're going to read, deciding what they're going to wear, these are all things that are decisions they make every day that are new and empowering," Osborn, one of two lawyers representing the adult siblings, told CBS News.

"They talk about how warm and loving these kids are and so appreciative," Corona mayor Karen Spiegel told CBS News. "Some of them have never really seen a toothbrush before. ... Things that we just take for granted mean so much to these kids."

The older kids have not been reunited yet with the younger siblings, who are living in two different foster homes, according to CBS News. They are all using Skype to catch up with each other.

David and Louise Turpin were arrested last month after their 17-year-old daughter escaped from the Perris home and called 911.

Investigators say the couple shackled the children to furniture as punishment and had them live a nocturnal lifestyle.

It has been revealed that two vehicles were recently stolen from the couple's home while they were in jail. A man accused of taking a Volkswagen Beetle from their driveway earlier this month has been arrested, according to the Desert Sun.
