Arizona G Allonzo Trier deemed ineligible after failed drug test

Star Arizona guard Allonzo Trier was deemed ineligible by the NCAA on Thursday after testing positive again for a performance-enhancing substance.

Arizona is appealing the ruling.

The school released a statement Thursday that said an NCAA student-athlete drug screening in late January "revealed the reappearance of a trace amount of a banned substance" that Trier tested positive for before the 2016-17 season. He missed the first 19 games of that season as a result of the test.

"The amount detected was miniscule by scientific standards and appears to be a remnant of a substance, which the NCAA agreed, Allonzo had unknowingly ingested in 2016," the school said.

Trier's scoring average of 19.6 points per game this season is just behind teammate Deandre Ayton's 19.7 that leads the Pac-12. The Wildcats are 21-6 and lead the conference with an 11-3 record.

Arizona plays Oregon State on Thursday night.
