NJ school district votes to add armed officers to all of its public schools

In the wake of the Parkland Florida school shooting that claimed 17 lives, a school district in New Jersey will add armed officers to all 11 of its public schools.

The East Brunswick Board of Education voted unanimously on the move the day after the school shooting that rocked the country.

The district's superintendent told ABC News that costs for the volunteer officers that will be compensated, will total around $430,000 -- in addition to $1.7M already allocated for existing unarmed security officers -- and that they will be at their posts as early as next week.

According to a press release, the district already has 71 safety officers posted at various sites, and the officers are retirees from the East Brunswick Police Department.

The superintendent told ABC News talks to add armed officers have been ongoing for a few years, but the Parkland shooting was the catalyst for the addition of armed officers.
