Vice mayor of Broward County calls Trump a hypocrite ahead of Florida visit

The vice mayor of Broward County, Fla., where 17 people were killed in a school shooting this week, called President Trump a “hypocrite” ahead of the commander-in-chief’s planned trip to the area.

“I can speak only as a Broward County commissioner and vice mayor, I speak for myself, and him coming here to me is absurd,” vice mayor Mark Bogen told CNN Friday.

His remarks came in response to a tweet from President Trump announcing the visit.

“I will be leaving for Florida today to meet with some of the bravest people on earth - but people whose lives have been totally shattered. Am also working with Congress on many fronts,” Trump said.

Boggan slammed the president for reversing a law that banned mentally ill people from legally purchasing firearms.

“How can you come here and talk about how horrible it is when you support these laws,” Bogen said.

“He comes here and wants to act as though this is horrible, this shouldn’t happen, but goes back to Washington and supports it. It is hypocrisy, it is absolute hypocrisy,” Bogen said.

Boggan said it’s going to take the Parkland, Fla. community “a long time to get over this.”

Gunman Nikolas Cruz began shooting students in the hallways of his former high school on Feb. 14. He used an AR-15-style rifle that he had purchased legally a year earlier to carry out the deadly attack.

Boggan argued that immediate legislative action should be taken to bar teenagers from purchasing assault weapons.

“If you just look at the statistics, the last five out of the six mass deadliest shootings in the past six years has been with an assault weapon,” Bogen said.

“We need to have laws that do not allow teenagers to buy assault weapons.”

“That’s something that can be done tomorrow with the governor and our state legislature,” he said.
