Kellyanne Conway addresses abuse allegations lodged against Rob Porter

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Sunday addressed the abuse allegations against former White House staff secretary Rob Porter.

Conway told CNN’s State of the Union host Jake Tapper that she was “horrified” and “shocked” to hear about the allegations by Porter’s ex-wives and he did the “right thing” by resigning.

When Tapper said, “sounds like you believe the women,” Conway replied, “I have no reason not to believe the women.”

She added, “but we can go ahead with no reason to believe that ever happened…it does shock the conscience. You try to process it, and you try to compare it against the person you’ve worked with.”

President Trump has been criticized for a more one-sided response to the allegations.

He told reporters on Friday that he wished Porter well in his career and noted that Porter says he’s “innocent.”

And on Saturday, Trump tweeted, “Peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation.”

“He said nothing about the women. Nothing about spousal abuse, he didn’t mention the women at all,” CNN’s Anderson Cooper said while referring to Trump’s statement on Friday. “The president it turns out is a remarkably understanding and forgiving guy when it comes to alleged abusers.”
