Philadelphia Eagles defeat New England Patriots to win first Super Bowl in franchise history

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII on Sunday night.

The Eagles scored first with a field goal in the first quarter and were ahead 22-12 at halftime after two quarters of trick plays and missed extra points on both sides. The Eagles briefly fell behind in the fourth quarter but regained the lead on a touchdown by Zach Ertz with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

After New England took possession, Philadelphia defensive end Brandon Graham punched the ball out of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's clutches with 2:09 left, and Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett recovered the fumble.

Graham told NBC of the strip-sack, "Just kept going, you know? We said we needed a play. If we got one more opportunity, we were going to give everything we got -- and I just so happened to get there.

"I'm just thankful because we've got a team that's resilient. You know, we're gonna stick around for a long time -- cause we world champs, baby, and it feels so good."

The Eagles scored a field goal to pad their lead with 1:05 left, and the Patriots were unable to score on the final drive of the game.

For the Eagles, who previously lost the Super Bowl in 1981 and 2005, the win capped a remarkable late-season run that many considered unthinkable when starting quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending injury in December and was replaced by Nick Foles.

Foles finished 28 of 43 for 337 yards with three touchdown passes and one interception. Brady completed 28 of 47 passes for 505 yards and three TDs.

"Just wasn't quite enough against a team like the Eagles," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said.

The 1,151 total yards in the game -- 613 by New England, 538 by Philadelphia -- represented an NFL record for any postseason game.

The victory marks the first Super Bowl Philadelphia has ever won.
