Twitter ignites over Paul Ryan's hand gesture during Trump's 'In God We Trust' moment

Updated

The Twitterverse exploded Tuesday night after State of the Union viewers noticed something Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan did with his hands.

During his address, President Trump invoked the name of God a few times, while Ryan, a self-described devout follower of the Christian faith, sat clapping behind him. But one of Trump's mentions of the heavenly father prompted a reaction from Ryan that many online found bizarre.

Trump stated during his address: "In America, we know that faith and family, not government and bureaucracy are the center of American life. The motto is: In God we trust."

And in response to Trump's remarks, Ryan pointed upwards, which many presumed to be toward God, while mouthing the words: "up there."

Ryan's gesture sparked an outcry of hilarious reactions from confused viewers on Twitter.

"Paul Ryan looked up and shot a single finger gun towards the ceiling as if God was a personal friend/is responsible for this dumpster fire," one user tweeted, while another wrote: "The #FakeNews didn't even cut to God pointing back at Paul Ryan."

However, a few on Twitter jumped to the politician's defense, clarifying that Ryan's gesture was simply directed towards the ceiling, which also displayed the words: "In God We Trust."
