Sports world reacts to sentencing of Larry Nassar

After seven days of testimony from more than 160 victims, Larry Nassar was finally sentenced to 175 years in prison on charges of sexual assault.

The former U.S. Olympics Gymnastics doctor was told Tuesday by Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, “I just signed your death warrant,” and the sports world, including some of the victims, have their own thoughts on the verdict.

“To Judge Aquilina : THANK YOU, YOU ARE MY HERO & Shout out to all of the survivors for being so brave & speaking like the queens that you are while looking at that monster,” Simone Biles wrote on Twitter. “He will no longer have the power to steal our happiness or joy. I stand with every one of you.”

Former tennis star Martina Navratilova expressed gratitude for some “reprieve and justice for all the brave women,” but made it clear that Nassar isn’t the only one who needs to be held responsible.

“USA gymnastics needs a serious house cleaning,” she tweeted, noting that “more people should be going to jail,IMO.”

And while former Olympic gold medalist Dominique Moceanu says she was never abused by Nassar, she also expressed that others, namely Martha and Bela Karolyi, need to be held accountable.

“Yes, a Nassar pedophile was allowed to thrive in this situation,” Moceanu tweeted. “They shouldn't get a pass.”

Mitt Romney, who ran the Salt Lake Olympics, commended the courage of the women who testified against Nassar.

“Over the years, I've witnessed the courage of athletes in Olympic Games but I've never seen greater Olympic courage than that shown by our women gymnasts in the courtroom in Lansing, Michigan,” Romney wrote on Twitter.

And Tim Daggett, a former Olympic gold medalist who is now a TV analyst, noted in a statement that “we can never forget the evil that has occurred in or community, and we must never rest to eradicate it from every corner.”

“Though Nassar and others have shown their wickedness to us,” Daggett continues, “I have also seen a tremendous amount of good throughout our sport. I thank, respect, and praise all who have made the difficult step to come forward.”
