Sen. John McCain on government shutdown: 'All of us share responsibility for this failure'

Senator John McCain released a statement on the government shutdown on Saturday, asking both sides to “put politics aside.”

“As Republicans and Democrats run to cable news to point fingers and assign blame, the hard reality is that all of us share responsibility for this failure,” McCain said, in part. “Political gamesmanship, an unwillingness to compromise, and a lack of resolve on both sides have led us to this point. Shamefully, no one will incur more harm than our brave men and women who have volunteered to fight and die for our freedom.”

“It’s time that both sides put politics aside, come to the table, and compromise on an agreement that will give our service members the training, equipment and resources they need to succeed,” McCain added.

There were hopes that a deal on the spending bill could be worked out Friday afternoon when President Trump invited Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to the White House for talks.

According to the New York Times, they “came close to an agreement to avert a government shutdown over lunch on Friday, but their consensus broke down later in the day when the president and his chief of staff demanded more concessions on immigration, according to people on both sides familiar with the lunch and follow-up calls between Mr. Trump and Mr. Schumer.”

Since then, both sides have blamed each other for the first shutdown since 2013.

“This will be called the #TrumpShutdown. There is no one who deserves the blame for the position we find ourselves in more than President Trump,” Schumer tweeted.

Meanwhile, the White House posted a statement Friday night referring to Democrats as “obstructionist losers.”

“Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown. Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country’s ability to serve all Americans,” the statement said. “We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands. This is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators.”
