Trump boasts about his approval among black Americans

President Trump on Tuesday painted himself as a beloved champion of black Americans.

“Unemployment for Black Americans is the lowest ever recorded. Trump approval ratings with Black Americans has doubled,” he wrote in a tweet referencing Fox News. “Thank you, and it will get even (much) better!”

Refuting Trump’s assertion, CNN noted, “Only 15% of black Americans said they approved of Trump’s job performance in the days following his inauguration last January — and it’s only gone downhill from there.”

“In the most recent Gallup weekly numbers, only 6% of black Americans said they approved of the President’s job performance,” the media outlet further explained.

The president’s tweet comes amid outrage over his alleged “shithole” characterization of Haiti and African countries made during a Thursday immigration meeting with lawmakers.

A number of people have since called Trump a racist.

In an interview with ABC News’ ‘This Week’ on Sunday with George Stephanopoulos, Democratic Representative John Lewis said while the U.S. has made “so much progress” on race in the past decades, Trump “is taking us back to another place.”

When Stephanopoulos asked, “do you think President Trump is a racist,” Lewis responded, “I think he is a racist.”
