Mom found dead in Brooklyn apartment building after cops ignored her 911 call was strangled

A Brooklyn mom found dead inside her apartment building an hour after two cops failed to respond to a 911 call was strangled, the city medical examiner has ruled.

Tonie Wells, 22, who died on Dec. 27, was officially ruled a homicide victim, clearing the way for prosecutors to seek upgraded charges against her husband, law enforcement sources said.

Wells’ husband, Barry, was taken into custody for a psychological evaluation, and has not yet been charged with her murder. He remains held without bail on Rikers Island, charged with aggravated family offense for violating an order of protection.

Sources said prosecutors were waiting for autopsy results before presenting more serious charges to a grand jury.

Mother of strangled woman sues NYPD for 911 records

An hour before her death, someone called 911 after hearing Wells screaming, “He’s going to kill me!” from her home on Sterling Place in Crown Heights, police sources said.

Two NYPD officers, Wing Hong Lau and Wael Jaber, responded to the home, but never got out of their patrol car to check on her.

An hour after that, a neighbor made another 911 call about a crying baby. That led cops to find Wells lifeless at the bottom of a stairwell. Lau and Jaber are now suspended.
