Sean Spicer suggests Oprah’s political inexperience would impede run for president

Oprah Winfrey’s moving and politically-charged speech at Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards left many wondering if she’s considering a bid for president.

The former White House press secretary Sean Spicer has since implied that her running may not be a good idea, as she lacks political experience.

“She doesn’t have the political infrastructure,” he said during an appearance on ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain.’ “And we’ve seen this before in our history — where people who have tried to pop in that are not in politics and have had a difficult time adjusting.”

The irony of the statement was too much for host Piers Morgan to let pass.

“Sean! Sean! Sean! The current president of the United States had no political experience! Sean! You were his press secretary! Have you forgotten Donald Trump?!” Morgan shouted.

There is, of course, the chance that Trump’s presidency was exactly what Spicer was talking about in terms of adjustment problems, but he opted to not dwell on his own words.

Instead, Spicer replied, “That withstanding, President Donald Trump proves that there is an appetite for outsiders, and that you don’t necessarily have to have [experience].”

“The question is: Was that an anomaly, or is that the new norm?” Spicer further commented.

We may have the opportunity to find out, as, according to CNN, two of Winfrey’s close friends said she is “actively thinking” about pursuing the high office.

The BBC also notes that Winfrey’s Sunday night speech had many hallmarks of the sort given by presidential candidates, including the potential campaign slogan, “a new day is on the horizon.”
