This time of year is usually associated with flu season, but it seems more Americans are getting sick this year with more severe symptoms.
According to the Chicago Tribune, flu season is peaking earlier this year, at least in Illinois, with 100 more influenza outbreaks across the state this season compared with last season at this time.
The flu season is usually considered from December to March. Hospitals across the country are taking precautions to prevent the spreading by restricting hospital visits for anyone younger than 18, limiting the number of visitors to two per patient, and promoting hand washing.
The most common strain of influenza this year is H3N2 (A), which was covered by this year's flu vaccine. It usually takes about 10 days for the vaccine to be effective after being administered.
