Rams safety Countess gets hefty fine for hit on 49ers' Goodwin

With Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons coming to town, the Los Angeles Rams are going to need all the help they can get in the secondary.

Luckily for them, the NFL has decided not to leave them lighter in the backfield. The same can't be said for Blake Countess' bank account.

The NFL on Friday announced it fined the Rams safety $48,620 for his hit last weekend on 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin. While the fine itself is significant (Countess makes a base salary of $540,000), some wondered if the league would instead suspend the second-year player as a repeat offender.

In Week 12, Countess was fined for a hit to the head of Saints tight end Coby Fleener. Like the play with Goodwin, the hit left Fleener with a concussion.

According to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith, Countess can appeal the fine in hopes of getting it reduced since the fine exceeded the amount of money Countess earned for playing in the 49ers game ($31,765). The fine for the hit on Goodwin was double the amount Countess was fined for the Fleener hit.

Countess played in all 16 games this season, starting one. He finished the season with 25 tackles, one pass defended and one interception.

Los Angeles hosts Atlanta on Saturday night in the Rams' first playoff game in Los Angeles since 1985.
