Mike Pence swears in Doug Jones as gay son appears to stare him down

Updated

On Wednesday, Alabama's newest Senator Doug Jones was formally sworn after his surprise victory over controversial candidate Roy Moore last month. And, as tradition dictates, the senator was sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence, becoming Alabama's first Democratic senator in 25 years.

But at the moment, a lot of buzz surrounding the ceremony seems to be less about the historic feat and more about a photograph of Doug Jones’ openly gay son, Carson Jones, that's begun making rounds on social media.

In the image, Carson Jones is seen flanking his father’s side at the ceremony, while appearing to many online users to have given the vice president -- who has long been dogged by accusations that he supports “conversion therapy" -- a withering look.

And, needless to say, given Pence’s history of supporting legislation deemed anti-LGBTQ, Twitter users have been happy to weigh in on photo with their own amusing captions for the moment.

"Photo of the decade: Doug Jones being sworn in, while his openly gay son QUIETLY DISINTEGRATES THE SOUL OF MIKE PENCE," one person tweeted, while another wrote: "Someone buy the rights to adapt this staring contest between Carson Jones and Mike Pence."

Carson Jones confirmed to The Advocate last month that he identifies as gay shortly after his father’s election.

“I am obviously thrilled with my dad’s victory,” Carson told the outlet. “We have been overwhelmed by the support of so many people that made this happen. Alabama made a really big statement that unity wins out. I couldn’t be prouder of him or my home state!”
