Sanders defends Trump’s golfing: He uses that time to build better relationships with lawmakers

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday said that President Trump’s golf trips have been instrumental in forging "deeper and better relationships with members of Congress."

As an example of what has been accomplished on the links, Sanders offered "tax reform and tax cuts" and explained that the president has "played golf with a number of Senators and used that time certainly to accomplish that."

The statement was followed with a question about why there’s such a lack of transparency about Trump’s golfing and if, perhaps, the White House has an issue with the time the president spends on the course.

"I think it’s the press that has an issue with his time on the course," Sanders replied.

Notably, it wasn’t that long ago that Trump was the one with the issue.

He apparently attacked former President Obama for spending too much time golfing and too little time tending to the nation’s problems.

During his presidential campaign, Trump promised his supporters, "I’m going to be working for you. I’m not going to have time to play golf."

According to NBC News, he has managed to fit numerous rounds into his schedule over the past year.

The outlet reports that Trump has “visited his golf clubs nearly 90 times in his first year.”

However, the publication notes that “the precise number of times Trump has actually played golf is difficult to track. His administration has tried to hide Trump’s activity, keeping his traveling press pool away and often refusing to confirm whether he has played golf.”
