Teen dies playing Russian roulette on New Year 's Day

A teenage boy is dead following a game of Russian roulette early New Year's Day.

According to CBS affiliated station KOIN 6, the victim arrived at a mobile home in Sherwood, Ore., with a gun in tow.

After speaking with several witnesses, police were able to confirm that the teen died while playing a game of Russian roulette alone.

Police and paramedics arrived at the Carriage Park Estates home just before 4 a.m., but were too late. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities were initially called to the mobile home community on reports that someone had committed suicide with a weapon, emergency officials told KOIN 6.

As officers made their way toward the scene, the details of what actually occurred began to unravel.

During a press briefing, Sherwood Police Captain Ty Hanlon said there was at least one "click" of the gun chamber before the teen was shot.

"It appears that he brought a handgun with him and from witnesses account that he was playing a game known as Russian roulette," Hanlon told KOIN 6. "We believe that he showed up and initiated this all on his own."

He's believed to have been using a .357 revolver which was not fully loaded.

It's unclear how he obtained the weapon or what connection he had to the people in the home in which he died.

Ken McPherson, who lives nearby, told KOIN 6 there are often young people hanging out at the dwelling.

"It's usually kids younger than 20 that I see down there," he said.

Another neighbor, Ashley Burgdorf, told the publication her husband was leaving for work when he saw emergency response workers outside the home. She later saw the people who live in the home and decided to reach out.

"I asked them if everything is OK, anything we can do, and he seemed really shook up," she recalled.

"He said that the boy just came out and shot himself, from what I understand. And he was trying to help him and he was really flustered, like he was really shook up about it."

Burgdorf also said she has two children in her house and is thankful they weren't hurt in the shooting.

"As far as I know, the shooting was, like, right there, like 50 feet away. So, you know, something could have easily happened," she said.

Police are still investigating the shooting.
