'The world is watching': Trump warns Iran amid anti-government protests

President Trump has weighed in on the recent anti-government protests in Iran.

“Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime’s corruption & its squandering of the nation’s wealth to fund terrorism abroad. Iranian govt should respect their people’s rights, including right to express themselves,” Trump wrote in a tweet on Friday. “The world is watching!”

According to CNN, “The protests — described as the largest public display of discontent since the 2009 Green Movement in Iran — have emerged against a backdrop of rising food and gasoline prices. Some arrests have been reported in Iranian media.”

The Iranian authorities have warned protesters against participating in “illegal” gatherings.

During his presidency, Trump has taken an aggressive stance toward Iran. Back in October, the president announced his decision to refrain from recertifying the Iran nuclear-deal compliance.

“Iran is under the control of a fanatical regime that seized power in 1979 and forced a proud people to submit to its extremist rule,” Trump said during the announcement. “This radical regime has raided the wealth of one of the world’s oldest and most vibrant nations, and spread death, destruction, and chaos all around the globe.”

“While the United States adheres to our commitment under the deal, the Iranian regime continues to fuel conflict, terror, and turmoil throughout the Middle East and beyond. Importantly, Iran is not living up to the spirit of the deal,” Trump added.
