D-backs' top draft pick pays off parents' mortgage for Christmas

A minor-league prospect for the Diamondbacks got his parents a major-league gift for Christmas.

Pavin Smith, the seventh overall pick in this year’s MLB draft, paid off his parents’ mortgage using some of his $5 million bonus he earned by signing with Arizona in June.

In a video posted to Twitter on Monday, Smith fittingly revealed his surprise inside the house with a letter read aloud by his mom.

“Because of all the sacrifices you made to get me where I am, I want our family home to be yours,” his mother announced before the family.

It didn’t take long before both parents started to cry.

“Thank you for everything you have done for me!” the 21-year-old wrote on Twitter. “This doesn’t make up for any of it. Love you both so much. Our home is finally all YOURS. Merry Christmas!”

Smith, whose $5,016,300 bonus matched the slot value, hit .342 with 13 homers and 77 RBIs this year as a junior at Virginia. The first baseman struck out just 12 times in 228 at-bats, drawing the attention of major-league scouts after helping the Cavaliers win the NCAA national championship as a freshman in 2015.

The Florida native can now add “Christmas Day champ” to his resume.
