Poll: Trump approval rating hits historic low

Updated

President Donald Trump's approval ratings hit a historic low on Tuesday.

According to the latest CNN poll, Trump's overall approval stands at 35 percent -- marking the 45th commander in chief's lowest return to date in a CNN dataset. Inversely, some 59 percent said they disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job as president.

Almost one full year into his White House tenure, Trump's anemic approval rating comes as congressional Republicans hope to deliver tax reform legislation to the president's desk for signing. Trump has been largely unsuccessful in using legislative tools to further his administration's agenda -- instead turning to federal agency power and executive action in overhauling many elements of former president Barack Obama's legacy.

While the CNN findings look bleak for the former billionaire businessman, Trump's daily approval rating on Tuesday stood at 43 percent with likely U.S. voters, according to Rasmussen Reports. That Rasmussen number also mirrors a CBNC survey's recent finding that forty-two percent of respondents approve of the job Trump is doing as president. RealClearPolitics' average of Trump's weekly approval rating currently stands at 38 percent, but it does not include the CNN survey as a factored poll.

While a recent poll found that Trump voters would support him even if he colluded with Russia, tension has been escalating between the Trump White House and special counsel Robert Mueller as he continues the FBI probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.

The CNN poll was fielded between Dec. 14 and 17, reached 1,001 adults and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.8 points.
