Trump tweets: ‘Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory’

President Trump on Tuesday congratulated Democrat Doug Jones on a “hard fought” win in Alabama against Republican Roy Moore.

“Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win,” Trump tweeted. “The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!”

In the days leading up to the election, Trump said Jones would be “weak” on various issues.

“We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat — Jones. I’ve looked at his record. It’s terrible on crime. It’s terrible on the border. It’s terrible on the military,” Trump told reporters on November 21. “I can tell you for a fact, we do not need somebody that’s going to be bad on crime, bad on borders, bad with the military, bad for the Second Amendment.”

However, multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Moore caused a firestorm and grabbed headlines in this election.

According to the New York Times, with 100% of precincts reporting, Jones received 671,151 votes compared to Moore’s 650,436.
