The August solar eclipse burned a crescent shape into woman’s eye

One woman who decided to look at the August solar eclipse with the naked eye had a crescent shape burned into her retina.

26-year-old Nia Payne took a quick peek for a few seconds, before putting on a pair of glasses she borrowed from a stranger, and looking for another 15 to 20 seconds, according to CNN.

Published in JAMA Ophthalmology, she noticed her vision was blurry and then lost vision in the center of her left eye when she got home.

She ended up at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai where doctors analyzed the sun-related damage called solar retinopathy.

They found that the eclipse did in fact burn a crescent shape into her retina, for which there is no treatment. It can either get better or worse over time.

Payne says, "so far, it's a nightmare, and sometimes it makes me very sad when I close my eyes and see it."

Doctors believe that the glasses Payne used were not up to the safety standards required to view the eclipse.
