Clinton insiders celebrate Lauer's downfall after 'seething' treatment during 2016 election

Updated

Matt Lauer’s firing from NBC on Wednesday prompted many Hillary Clinton supporters to recall his apparent uneven treatment of the 2016 presidential candidate during the “Commander-In-Chief Forum.”

Some even sense "a degree of justice in the ouster," according to a Politico report.

Lauer received some criticism, especially from Clinton insiders and supporters, for questioning Clinton about her emails at length and while asking her rival Donald Trump relatively simple, open-ended questions in comparison. Many complained he failed to fact check Trump's answers when they were untrue, sparking heavy criticism.

Some even complained the double standard was an example of sexism.

After NBC News announced that Lauer had been terminated from the "Today Show" over allegations of "inappropriate sexual behavior," many Clinton backers took to social media to revel in the news.

“Matt Lauer was fired today. One by one, we’re finding out the true character of the male journalists who treated Hillary Clinton (and her voters) with seething disdain,” Peter Daou, a former Clinton campaign worker, wrote on Facebook.

Neera Tanden, another supporter, cited Lauer as an example of the media’s coverage of Clinton at large.

"Another person whose interview with Trump was ridiculously soft and interview with Hillary was incredibly tough: Matt Lauer," Tanden said.

While NBC News was reluctant to criticize Lauer’s candidate forum performance in 2016, the network was swift in responding to the recent complaints about his alleged sexual misconduct.

Lauer has since released a statement noting, “Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.”
