Trump lashes out at NBC News after Matt Lauer fired for 'inappropriate sexual behavior'

Updated

President Donald Trump responded to the announcement that NBC News had fired longtime anchor Matt Lauer by attacking Andy Lack, the chairman of NBC News and MSNBC.

"Wow, Matt Lauer was just hired from NBC for 'inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.' But when will the top executives at NBC & Comcast be fired for putting out so much Fake News. Check out Andy Lack's past," the president tweeted early Wednesday morning.

"So now that Matt Lauer is gone when will the Fake News practitioners at NBC be terminating the contract of Phil Griffin? And will they terminate low ratings Joe Scarborough based on the 'unsolved mystery' that took place in Florida years ago? Investigate!" he added in a second tweet later.

The president has been a frequent critic of NBC News, recently accusing the outlet of having "made up" a report that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called Trump a "moron" and was on "the verge of resignation."

"It was fake news, it was a totally phony story," Trump said of the report. NBC News stood by the story.

Trump, who has faced allegations of sexual misconduct as well, has been a frequent critic of NBC News.

Trump's target, Andy Lack, has spent years working in TV News. He rejoined NBC News as chairman in 2015 shortly before Trump entered the 2016 presidential election.

Lack first came to work at the news outlet as president in the 1990s to help restore credibility after "Dateline" was criticized for using a staged explosion in a story about truck safety. Lack helped promote Lauer to his current role as the public face of the morning news show. Lauer served as anchor and co-anchor at "Today" for more than 20 years until he was fired this week.

Trump has been interviewed frequently by Lauer, especially during his time at the helm of NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice." The president has mostly praised the former "Today" co-anchor in the past, despite often criticizing others at NBC News -- most notably Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski who helm the morning news coverage at MSNBC.

"Doing the @todayshow with @MLauer was great- I really like Matt," Trump tweeted in October 2012.

Trump came under fire during the 2016 presidential election for comments recorded on what has since been known as the "Access Hollywood" tape -- another NBC program, in which he referred to sexually explicit behavior he defended as "locker room talk" at the time.

He has since suggested that the tape might not be authentic.
