Russian official warns of potential 'apocalyptic' outcome from North Korea

One senior Russian official warns of an “apocalyptic” scenario that is taking form on the Korean Peninsula.

On Monday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said, in the hope of a peaceful resolution, “I hope that a common sense, pragmatism and an instinct of self-preservation would prevail among our partners to exclude such negative scenario,” according to Russian state-run news agency Tass.

His warning comes as North Korea has continued to ignore the international demands to halt its nuclear weapons development program.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has attempted to dissuade the U.S. from using military force against North Korea, promoting a peaceful solution instead, according to CNBC.

China would also prefer a peaceful solution so as to prevent the collapse of the regime and a surge of refugees.

The long-standing tension between North and South Korea was only exacerbated after a soldier was recently shot as he defected to South Korea through the demilitarized zone.
