Texas governor offers $20G reward in death of border patrol agent

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is offering a reward to anyone who could help authorities capture those responsible for murdering a border patrol agent and seriously injuring another.

Abbott announced in a press release on Monday that the tipster will receive a $20,000 reward if the information leads to an arrest and conviction.

"We owe a great deal of gratitude to the brave men and women of the United States Border Patrol who serve every day to protect our homeland," he said. "Cecilia and I offer our deepest condolences to the families of the agents kills and seriously injured in this attack. As authorities continue their investigation, it is important that they receive any and all information to help apprehend and deliver swift justice to those responsible."

Officials still have not said what led up to 36-year-old border patrol agent Rogelio Martinez being killed and his partner seriously injured in the Big Bend Sector on Sunday morning.

Jeannette Harper, with the El Paso division of the FBI, told the San Antonio Express-News that neither agent had been shot.

National Border Patrol Council labor union vice president Art Del Cueto said he believes the two agents were involved in a rock attack.

Del Cueto, speaking to the Washington Post, said that he heard from other border patrol agents that Martinez and his partner were responding to an electric sensor that had been activated when they were apparently ambushed.

What officials have confirmed is that early Sunday morning Martinez and his partner responded to some sort of activity on Interstate 10 near the Van Horn Station area in southwest Texas.

Martinez's partner radioed for help after the two men were injured, and they were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Martinez, who became a border patrol agent in 2013, died from his injuries. His partner is still hospitalized in serious condition. Officials are not releasing his name to give privacy to his family.

President Trump quickly commented on the incident declaring that he will build the Mexican border wall.

"Border Patrol Officer killed at Southern Border, another baldy hurt," he wrote. "We will seek out and bring to justice those responsible. We will, and must, build the Wall!"
