New York woman who stole from Uber driver says she's being harassed

A woman who stole cash from her Uber driver’s tip jar says she’s being harassed online after footage of the theft went viral.

The video, which appears to be taken from the front windshield of the vehicle, shows Gabrielle Canales, 18, reach into her driver’s tip jar and snatch its contents just before she and two friends exit their ride.

It’s unclear how the footage, recorded during a trip in August, surfaced on Reddit last week.

Canales told BuzzFeed she instantly regretted her actions, and even paid her driver back the same day.

She posted a screenshot of a receipt for $5.00 in tip—the amount she claims she stole.

“I understand I’m completely wrong and I’m not denying it,” she told BuzzFeed News.

But Uber hasn’t forgiven her—she remains banned from using the app, BuzzFeed reports.

“The lesson was learned that same day. That’s why the gentleman was paid back,” she told BuzzFeed news.

“It was me being childish,” she said of the theft. “To the Uber driver, my sincere apologies.”

Uber confirmed the incident, and Canales has been blasted for the theft, and her subsequent activity on social media.

She created a series of seemingly unrepentant posts following the incident, including one that mocked the publicity around the theft.

“spanish mami bookgangs $5 and get caught and is exposed 3 months later,” she captioned one image, the Daily Mail reported.

Canales said she felt comfortable making light of the incident and the ensuing outrage because it had happened three months earlier, BuzzFeed reported.

“I didn’t need this video to go viral to teach me a lesson. I learned the lesson that same day. Before the video went viral, the man was paid back,” she told the news outlet.

A Twitter user commented on an image of Canales posing in front of a painting, asking where it had come from.

“She stole it,” another user responded.

On Friday, Canales tried to earn some sympathy from her trolls.

“lol so you’re going to tell me growing up you never ever did anything bad, give me a break it was a mistake. next you care about 18 years life lmaoo,” she wrote.

One of her critics said she hadn’t just made a mistake, but that she had showed her character “as a person stealing someone else’s pay.” “You’re trash and you ain’t even all that, tragic,” the same user wrote.

Canales admitted that what she did was wrong, but said her actions don’t warrant the death threats she says she has received.

She says she's also being harassed sexually. Her Instagram feed features photos of her posing semi-nude.

“I’m wrong for taking $5, and according to the world, I need to die,” she said.

“I hope people understand that this isn’t my character and it was just a bad choice I made over the summer.”
