Poll: Nearly half of white Southerners say they're under attack

White Southerners believe they are under attack.

A new Winthrop University poll found that 46 percent of white Southerners agree or strongly agree that they are under attack in the United States, while more than 75 percent of black respondents believed racial minorities are under attack.

The national debate over Confederate statues was specifically found to be a pain point for Southerners.

40 percent believed the symbols should stay, while 24 percent said a plaque should be added to contextualize the statue -- but what exactly would it say, and would that add fuel or sand to the fire?

27 percent said that the statues should be relocated to a museum.

And when asked the most important issue facing the United States, race was the big winner. Black respondents were also twice as likely to say race was the most important issue.

830 residents in 11 southern states were surveyed for the poll.
