School apologizes after Confederate flag was held at Veterans Day assembly

TUMWATER, Wash. (KCPQ) — A local school district is apologizing for what it says was a mistake after a Confederate flag was used during a Veterans Day ceremony.

It happened at Bush Middle School in the Tumwater School District.

The school says students held up 14 different flags from American history. One of the kids who held up the Confederate flag was a student of color. The school says that was a mistake and wasn't supposed to happen.

In a statement to us the district went on to say, "The presence of the flag itself in this program failed to honor our commitment to ensuring a safe, respectful, and culturally sensitive school environment."

School officials also apologized to the student, her family and everyone else who was offended.

***Update*** It breaks our hearts to announce that on March 02, 2016 we had to make the tough decision to put Cotton down. He had been suffering for awhile with pain that we could no longer successfully manage and decided to let him pass on with dignity. We believe that Cotton was placed in our lives as much to save us as he was to save him. Thank you for all your support, now go hug your dog. Our deaf rescue pitbull excited to have daddy come home!!! Go Oregon National Guard!!! He had been gone for drill weekend and was so happy to see him! I think Cotton didn't know how long 2 days could feel! and for the haters out there I had just seen my husband the day before. So pardon my "lack of excitement :)" thank you to the supporters, I know theres alot of haters posting on here. "Our son, recently home from Afghanistan, surprises his sister during the graduation ceremony at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She was extremely disappointed when we told her he would not be back until the end of the month. Guess we lied a little. Ok, a lot. A special thanks to all at Cal Poly who made this possible. Enjoy!" An Upstate 8th grader got a surprise from his dad who just returned from Afghanistan.
**Update 10-22-12** - THANK YOU ALL for the amazing support and uplifting comments. Our family is so grateful and loves reading all the comments. If you want to see the actual recorded greeting, you can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kntr1XOOD6s Also - Rich Sr. is a very strong 70, and a child-at-heart - he loves surprises, so no worries about his health, please ;) ****************************** Father of Air Force Lieutenant gets the ultimate surprise at his 70th birthday party. The story: Rich Sr.'s surprise 70th birthday party took a playful turn when a large gorilla turned up at the front door with a balloon. Little did he know that inside that gorilla suit was his son, Rich. Jr. - a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. A special pre-taped message from his son brought tears - but nothing compared to the tears that flowed when the pre-taped message ended, and his son revealed himself in-person. Not a dry eye in the house. God bless you, Rich - and God bless all of the selfless men and women who serve.

He surprised his sister, Tressie, at lunch. A mock drawing was set up for free ticket to football game and t-shirt. Tressie's name was drawn, and as she was waiting on stage, her brother came out from behind the curtain! It was his first time home since he joined the Army." Julia and Brian Woodburn (US Army) have been deployed for a while, separating them not only from each other, but their daughter, Addison. They decided to show up through a magic show at Gilbert Jr. High in Louisiana to surprise their baby girl with their return. These are some of the nicest people I've ever met, and it was an amazing experience to film this. Truly emotional. Thank you, Brian and Julia, for your service, and welcome home! ** NOTICE: My dad (the magician) did NOT throw the flag on the ground. You can't see what's behind the curtain (plenty of clothes, bags and cases), and he tosses it specifically on the case he keeps it in. @naterobertsii www.naterobertsii.com www.nathanjroberts.com

My husband has been deployed for 6 months. Before he left, we adopted (are long term foster parents for SNARR-a special needs animal rescue) a special needs puppy with a severe birth defect. Emma and her daddy were very close! It broke her, and his, heart when he left. When I come in the door, she normally sits at the end of the hallway and waits for me to pick her up. This time, when her daddy came in, she went to him! Mikey (the tan dog) was so happy he cried! Gotta love homecomings!! Many have asked why Emma doesn't have a doggy wheelchair. Emma has had several wheelchairs. Unfortunately, she refuses to use any of them. We have had custom ones made even. We have worked with the companies to teach her to use it, but she will have nothing to do with it or with a "drag bag" or harness. She's always been this way. Emma has no idea she's "special". She loves life and runs and plays well on her own outdoors. She just has a little trouble on the tile indoors. We do have rugs layed out for her all over the house, but we did not have any in this hallway at the time. That's why you see her hopping to him. Please watch her other videos on here or on her Facebook page (link below) to see how she really gets around. Also, Emma is still under the medical care of SNARR, the special needs rescue group that we got her from as foster parents. So that they can keep a close eye on her, they have agreed to let us keep her for the rest of her life (Woohoo!) but still pay her medical bills, which are quite expensive at times. If you want to check them out, see the other special dogs they have there, and possibly donate to help pay Emma's medical bills, please check out their website: http://snarranimalrescue.org/. We, as Emma's parents, are not asking for ANY money! Any money donated goes directly to the animal rescue, not to us. We are blessed enough just to have her! Here's Emma's FB page if you wanna read more about her and see more videos: http://www.facebook.com/EverythingEmmaDog?ref=ts&fref=ts
I was gone for 3 months at Basic Combat Training & AIT. I was able to come home for a short time during Christmas. So as some of you may know, my mom was in Afghanistan for 6 months. Micheal thought she was coming home next week, but she surprised him at his school. Happy Friday the 13th everyone. - Filmed in Canada
http://HomecomingHeroes.com - Daily Surprise Military Homecoming Videos and Pictures! "Where to begin! My husband surprised me two days after Mother's Day. I had been bugging him for months about when he would be able to come home, and he had me totally convinced that he was not going to be able to come at all. I had a feeling something was up a few days before because his entire family was coming to town, including his brother Jim (who is also Army and was coming home from Europe). But they all convinced me the surprise was really Jim coming back early, and not my husband coming home. His mom had come to our house for dinner, and I even looked in the back of her pickup for somebody back there... but didn't find him. Little did I know everybody else was parking down the street and getting ready to sneak up to the house. The moment I saw him was just unreal. I remember reaching into my fridge for some drinks and getting up to hand one to my mother-in-law, and then I saw the boots, the uniform, and then the face. It was just complete joy, disbelief and relief, which is why I fell on the floor and sobbed uncontrollably. Anyways, it was the surprise of a lifetime, me and my girls had missed him soooooo much, and it was amazing. We had an amazing R&R, and our two little girls loved having daddy back. We're reaching the end of the deployment :)" All videos submitted by their creators to http://HomecomingHeroes.com. The Faile family from Kershaw, South Carolina, was the Columbia Metropolitan Airport Military Family of the Game, set to be recognized on the field. Their first surprise was a message to them from their dad/husband, Sergeant First Class Scott Faile, playing on the video board, followed by an even bigger surprise. The Gamecocks would go on to beat Georgia, 35-7, just as Sgt. Faile predicted.
