Hurricane Harvey hero 'Mattress Mack' out $10 million after offering refunds if Astros won

It was a win-win for this mattress mogul after his team said nighty night to the Dodgers.

Some Astros fans are sleeping even more comfortably thanks to a promise made by Jim McIngvale, aka "Mattress Mack," who said he'd refund customers of his Gallery Furniture store who spent $3,000 on mattresses if the Houston team took the World Series.

With Wednesday night's Game 7 in the history books, McIngvale took a look at his record books and admitted he could be out $10 million, but the local legend is more than fine with the outcome.

"It's the best thing we could ever possibly do. The Astros inspired the city," he told the Houston Chronicle. "We're thrilled to give this money back to excited customers. We bleed orange out here."

Mattress Mack gained national notoriety in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, when he quickly opened the doors of Gallery Furniture to residents suddenly with nowhere else to go as well as National Guard servicemen, turning the showroom and warehouse into a de facto shelter.

"We said to hell with profits, let's take care of the people," McIngvale told ABC News in August. "That's the right thing to do, that's the way I was brought up."

A constant presence both in the lives of Houstonians thanks to his over-the-top furniture ads and the Astros trip to the championship, McIngvale was at the ALDS opener versus the Red Sox where he threw out the first pitch. Accordingly, Houston put Boston to bed 8-2.

During the World Series itself, he even chartered a 737 so he could fly 98 fans to Game 6 in Los Angeles, with first responders among the lucky group.

The high stakes-loving Houstonian knows what he's doing though when it comes to such wagers, as he reportedly took out an insurance premium that would cover up to 20 percent of the loss if he had to pay out the sum, and he placed a bet in Las Vegas that has earned him at least $1 million.

McIngvale made a similar wager in 2014, promising to reimburse the first 500 customers who spend more than $6,300 on furniture if the then-faltering Astros won 63 games.

The team won 70 games and he lost over $4 million.
